All of the screenshots on
this page
are from the same Medialon / WonderWare installation that Mike and Erik
designed and programmed in 2004. The operator interface consisted of 2
main monitors: Medialon control on the right and WonderWare feedback from
the PLC network on the left. The interface was designed to make both
systems look like one continuous display. There was also a smaller
matching AMX screen nearby. This screenshot
shows the flame effects system display. |
 |
This control system
consisted of 2 Medialon Manager 3 computers running simultaneously.
Each tracked the same SMPTE source as well as each others variables
constantly throughout the show. If needed, the operator could switch
from the primary computer to the back-up and back during the show with no
interruption in operation. This screenshot shows
the main navigation and operation display. |

In addition to information
passed between the Medialon computers, WonderWare fed key PLC points to
Medialon. This allowed the system to automatically detect problems
and, in many cases, popup a step by step guide for the Operator to correct
the situation. This was especially important given that the show ran
on SMPTE and many common issues happened too quickly to be fixed before the
window of opportunity was missed. This
screenshot shows the hydraulic lifts controls. |
 |
The controls and feedback
on each screen were deliberately limited to what is needed by the Operator
for a normal show. All troubleshooting and additional information was
contained in popup screens, most of which appeared automatically when the
system detected a related problem. This
screenshot shows the laser and 70mm projector controls. |

Though thematically
unrelated to the show itself, Mike and Erik chose the movie Tron as
the visual style for all of the interface layouts for this project.
The graphics were all produced in Adobe Photoshop. The Medialon
portion of this project is currently being used as an example of user
interfaces in the Medialon company's programmer training course.

page, and timecode rehearsal display. |
